Delhi and Bangalore among 2022’s top-performing global airports

Alongside top-performing worldwide airports, Cirium also revealed the list of most punctual airlines across the globe, in which Brazil’s Azul Airlines emerged as “the global leader”.

In the wake of the COVID-19 pandemic, the last year has seen a challenging operational environment around the world, with many airlines and airports enduring delays, interruptions, and resource challenges. Despite this, a lot of airports throughout the world performed admirably, according to the latest Cirium Aviation Analytics study.

Cirium produced a list of the top-performing worldwide airports in 2022, with Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport ranking second and Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International (IGI) Airport ranking seventh. According to the data, while Bangalore’s Kempegowda International Airport saw 84.08% of 201,897 flights depart on time, Delhi’s IGI Airport saw 81.84% of 411,205 flights depart on time.

“During 2022 airlines had difficulty anticipating the sudden recovery in demand. They had been disappointed on several previous occasions throughout the pandemic, when it looked like demand was picking up, only for it to reverse course in the face of new Covid variants,” Cirium stated in its report that when the recovery began in 2022, the aviation industry struggled with understaffing and insufficient capacity, causing delays and cancellations.

“In time, however, operations greatly improved as the industry added workers and adjusted capacity. 2023 appears to hold great promise for the aviation industry,” the report read.

According to Cirium, the top-performing global airports were:

  1. Haneda Airport, Tokyo
  2. Kempegowda International Airport, Bangalore, India
  3. Salt Lake City International Airport, Utah, US
  4. Detroit Metropolitan Wayne County Airport, Michigan, US
  5. Philadelphia International Airport, Pennsylvania, US
  6. Minneapolis-St. Paul International Airport, Minnesota, US
  7. Indira Gandhi International Airport, Delhi, India
  8. Seattle-Tacoma International Airport, Washington, US
  9. El Dorado International Airport, Bogota
  10. Charlotte Douglas International Airport, North Carolina, US

Meanwhile, Cirium issued a list of the world’s most punctual airlines, in addition to the top-performing worldwide airports. Brazil’s Azul Airlines emerged as “the global top”. Delta Airlines, on the other hand, received the Cirium Platinum Award for worldwide operational excellence for the second year in a row. StarFlyer of Japan has been awarded the world’s leading low-cost airline.

Cirium’s analysis included no European airlines or airports, and no UK airline or airport made the cut for its regional ranking of the best performer in Europe.
