Hyundai Motor India commits to ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ with localization of 1,200+ key components

Hyundai Motor India Limited (HMIL) is reinforcing its dedication to the ‘Make-in-India’ initiative by showcasing significant indigenization achievements at the Bharat Mobility Global Expo 2025. With a strategic roadmap, HMIL has achieved up to 92% localization in its manufacturing processes, significantly boosting local production capabilities.

A key milestone in this journey is the local assembly of battery-packs at HMIL’s state-of-the-art facility in Chennai. In collaboration with Mobis India Limited, the plant has commenced operations with an annual assembly capacity of 75,000 units. This facility supports a range of battery types, including NMC (Lithium-Nickel-Manganese-Cobalt Oxide) and LFP (Lithium-Iron-Phosphate), ensuring optimized costs and a steady supply of batteries for Hyundai’s electric vehicles (EVs) produced in India. The Hyundai CRETA Electric is the first model to feature locally assembled battery packs.

HMIL’s localization efforts have contributed significantly to foreign exchange savings, amounting to US $672 million (INR 5,678 Crore+). These efforts have also created more than 1,400 direct employment opportunities, further supporting India’s economic growth.

The company’s localization strategy extends to more than 1,238 parts, with over 194 suppliers working closely with HMIL at its Chennai facility. Key components such as alternators, alloy wheels, and TPMS sensors are now locally produced, achieving 100% localization. This approach, combined with a dedicated team, is positioning HMIL as a leader in fostering India’s automotive manufacturing sector.

Looking ahead, HMIL plans to expand its localization efforts at its upcoming plant in Talegaon, Maharashtra, as part of its broader vision to promote an ‘Atmanirbhar Bharat’ and strengthen India’s manufacturing ecosystem.
