Elon Musk proposed to launch robotaxis in China during April visit; Report

Tesla plans to launch its robotaxi in China and test its cutting-edge driver-assistance package there. Elon Musk, the CEO of Tesla, is reported to have proposed the concept during his recent visit to China.  According to Reuters, authorities in China responded positively to Musk’s concept of creating robotaxi. Tesla stated in April that it will introduce the robotaxi on August 8 this year, as the US-based EV manufacturer tackles low sales and tough competition from Chinese EVs.

As per reports, Chinese officials reacted to Tesla’s offer by stating that the nation ‘welcomes Tesla to do some robotaxi tests in the country’. The authorities were also cited stating they hope Tesla can  ‘set a good example.’

However, getting approval for its Full Self-Driving (FSD) features to seek data needed for Tesla vehicles would be an issue. China has yet to approve the use of FSD and has opposed foreign carmakers collecting data from Chinese customers.

Getting permission to utilize FSD is essential to Tesla’s efforts to introduce robotaxi in China. Musk visited Beijing last month and had a meeting with Chinese Premier Li Qiang. As per reports, Tesla plans to test the robotaxi in Shanghai, where the EV maker’s largest Gigafactory outside of the United States is situated.
