Sri Lanka ‘s Prime Minister Ranil Wickremesinghe on Saturday called for an emergency meeting of all the party leaders amidst protests. Which took place today demanding the resignation of President Gotabaya Rajapaksa. The protestors had reportedly stormed into the President’s residential compound and echoed slogans in collective criticism shots. However, gunshots were also heard earlier according to reports. The police forces were also observed using tear gas to disperse the crowd. Reports confirm that President Rajapaksa has now been evacuated to a government approved safe house for his own safety.
It is believed that these protests against him were able to take place since the night curfew was lifted earlier. The protestors hold him responsible for Sri Lanka’s worst economic meltdown in history.
As of this time, soldiers made trial shots in the air to scatter the angry mob. And a curfew was imposed today from 3:30 p.m. as per the latest updates. The protestors were holding the Sri Lanka national flag and helmets surrounding the President’s residence. The reason for such protests was also the collapse of the Sri Lankan economy last month as announced by the Prime Minister. The protesters believe that the high inflation and fuel and food shortages were caused by the President’s ineffectiveness. They had started the protest when restrictions were eased.
