Two stories are unfolding simultaneously at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Saturday afternoon — one of cricket at its most brilliant, the other of one of the most alarming fielding injuries seen in recent IPL memory. Delhi Capitals have posted a monstrous 264/2 in their 20 overs, powered by a breathtaking unbeaten 152 from KL Rahul — the third-highest score in IPL history and the highest ever by an Indian batter. But the match has been overshadowed by a serious injury to Lungi Ngidi, who landed badly on his head and neck while attempting a catch in the field and was stretchered off the ground with an ambulance called to the venue.

What Happened to Ngidi

The incident occurred in the 2.3rd over of the PBKS innings. Axar Patel tossed it up outside off, Priyansh Arya toe-ended a lofted drive high toward mid-off. Ngidi tracked back, never looked comfortable with it, stretched backwards going for a fingertip — and missed. But the fall was far worse than the dropped catch. He came down hard on his head, and the ground at Arun Jaitley Stadium, baked hard under the intense Delhi afternoon heat, offered no cushion.

Stretcher, physio, doctor, neck brace — the full emergency protocol came out. The crowd went completely silent. Ngidi landed badly on his neck while fielding and was treated by the doctors — it seems he will have to be stretchered off via the ambulance. Hemang Badani, in commentary, suggested a neck brace be placed. David Miller and Tristan Stubbs — Ngidi’s South African teammates — looked visibly shaken. Ricky Ponting, PBKS’s coach, walked to the middle. Dushmantha Chameera warmed up to replace him.

The ambulance came onto the ground. The scenes were deeply unsettling — and the hope from everyone at the ground and watching was simply that Ngidi would be okay. He was responding to the doctor, which was the one reassuring sign amid difficult scenes.

KL Rahul — One of the Great IPL Innings

Against that backdrop, what KL Rahul did with the bat in DC’s innings was extraordinary. After Pathum Nissanka’s early dismissal, Rahul and Nitish Rana dominated with a record 220-run stand for the second wicket — the highest ever for Delhi Capitals in IPL history — as the Punjab attack unravelled under relentless hitting and sloppy fielding.

Rahul brought up his century in just 47 deliveries — his 6th IPL hundred. He then went on to score 150, joining Chris Gayle and Brendon McCullum in an elite list of IPL batters to achieve that milestone. He finished unbeaten on 152.

Punjab Kings were left to rue costly mistakes — Shashank Singh dropped Rahul twice, when he was on 12 and 51. Those chances proved fatal. Rahul made them pay in the most comprehensive manner possible.

Nitish Rana’s brilliant knock came to an end on 91 as he fell just short of a well-deserved century, caught by Shreyas Iyer off a Xavier Bartlett full toss, but the damage was already done as the massive partnership was broken only once DC had put the game beyond any realistic reach.

The Match Situation — PBKS Need 265

DC have posted 264 runs on the board and PBKS have a mountain to climb. PBKS got off to a blistering start, scoring 43 in 2.3 overs before the Ngidi incident halted play. With Chameera coming in as replacement and DC already knowing their total is 264, the bowling attack will need to be reorganised for the defence.

DC playing XI: KL Rahul (wk), Pathum Nissanka, Sameer Rizvi, Axar Patel (c), Nitish Rana, Tristan Stubbs, David Miller, Lungi Ngidi, Kuldeep Yadav, T Natarajan, Mukesh Kumar. Chameera is now the replacement for Ngidi under concussion or injury substitution protocols.

The game goes on. But the only thing anyone at Arun Jaitley — player, coach or fan — is really thinking about right now is Lungi Ngidi.

Business Upturn will update this report as further information on Ngidi’s condition becomes available.
