Earlier in the day, Justice (retired) Ranjana Prakash Desai, the head of the expert panel, held a press conference in Delhi to provide insights into the drafting process. Justice Desai affirmed that the proposed Uniform Civil Code for Uttarakhand has been drafted meticulously, considering diverse perspectives and analyzing various statutes and laws, including the legal frameworks of select countries.

The implementation of a Uniform Civil Code aims to establish a common set of laws governing personal matters, such as marriage, divorce, inheritance, and adoption, for all citizens regardless of their religious affiliations. It seeks to ensure equality, justice, and harmony by promoting uniformity in civil laws throughout the country.

Uttarakhand’s decision to pursue the implementation of the UCC demonstrates its commitment to fostering social cohesion and upholding the principles of equality and justice. By initiating the process, the state joins the broader national discourse on the adoption of a Uniform Civil Code, which has been a longstanding subject of debate in India.

The completion of the draft by the expert committee marks an important milestone in Uttarakhand’s journey towards implementing the Uniform Civil Code. The draft is expected to be submitted to the state government promptly, after which it will undergo thorough scrutiny and possible modifications before being enacted into law.

The potential implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in Uttarakhand not only signifies the state’s progressive approach but also paves the way for discussions and deliberations at the national level. The matter holds significant implications for the legal framework and social fabric of the country, making it a topic of keen interest for legal experts, policymakers, and citizens alike.
