Pushkar Singh Dhami to be the next Uttarakhand CM

Dhami was the president of the BJP youth wing in the state and is an MLA from the Khatima constituency in the Udham Singh Nagar district.

Pushkar Singh Dhami was elected as the new Chief Minister of Uttarakhand on Saturday. This came after the former Uttarakhand CM Tirath Singh Rawat resigned late at night on Friday.

Dhami was the president of the BJP youth wing in the state and is an MLA from the Khatima constituency in the Udham Singh Nagar district. His election as Chief Minister is surprising, considering the Tourism Minister Satpal Maharaj and legislator Dhan Singh Rawat were said to be the top contenders for the office.

“My party has given an opportunity to serve an ordinary worker. We will work on public issues with everyone’s cooperation,” Dhami told ABP after his election as the new Uttarakhand Chief Minister.

Earlier on Saturday, the Uttarakhand BJP unit held a legislature party meeting to decide the next Chief Minister of Uttarakhand. For this meeting, the party had appointed Union Agriculture Minister Narendra Singh Tomar as the central observer.

Rawat’s resignation came after four months in the office. In order to keep his Chief Ministership, Rawat had to elected in the state assembly within six months. However, by-elections couldn’t be possible as general elections in the state were due within a year.

“In the legislature meet at 3 pm, we will elect the leader (CM). Post that, we will meet the Governor for government formation. It is possible that the CM will be among the MLAs,” Kaushik had told ANI post his Rawat’s resignation.

Dhami will be the third BJP Chief Minister since the party’s win in the 2017 assembly elections.
