Although debris flowed into the main market area and life was disrupted as a result of flash floods caused by a cloudburst in the Union Territory of Ladakh, there are no reports of any fatalities, authorities said on Saturday. They said that the debris penetrated numerous buildings in the low-lying regions and caused some damage to them. The cloudburst struck the Gangles area of the Union territory late on Friday night, flooding many portions of Leh town.
According to a police spokeswoman, rescue and recovery efforts are being carried out throughout Leh town, particularly in the regions of Khakshal, Sanker, Skampari, Chhubi, Zangsti, and the main market Gonpa Soma. The Dalai Lama’s presentation in Leh was postponed as a result of the flash floods, according to the administration. They said that there was a tonne of debris in the Chokhang Vihara region and that several stores in the Gangles neighbourhood had been destroyed.
Following the sudden flood, many visitors, including foreigners, donated a helping hand and were spotted cleaning the major market area. Thupstan Chewwang, the president of the Ladakh Buddhist Association, reported that Army men willingly arrived quickly after the flash floods occurred and assisted in minimising the damage. He said, “I want to thank the Army. “Since the morning, hundreds of Buddhists, Muslims, and foreigners have contributed, demonstrating the coexistence and solidarity of all religions in Ladakh. All of these folks have volunteered to assist with the rebuilding efforts, according to Chewwang.
According to him, Chogam Vihara is a low-lying region, which means water and debris can enter structures like their meeting hall and harm furniture and other items. Over six inches of muck are present. Even though the financial loss is not great, we can learn from this in the future. In order to fix the drainage system, which is in disarray, the UT administration will need to consider the issue. While this is going on, Ladakh Police is pleading with members of the public, members of civil society, and volunteers from a variety of groups to help the police and civil administration with the rescue efforts as soon as possible. This will allow for the return of regular life and traffic laws.
