Delhi HC issues notice to environmentalist on Centre’s review petition against EIA draft translation

Government has moved to HC seeking review of the order that mandated translation of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) draft into 22 languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the constitution.

Government has moved to HC seeking review of the order that mandated translation of the Environment Impact Assessment (EIA) draft into 22 languages mentioned in the Eighth Schedule of the constitution. The Delhi HC has issued a notice to the environmentalist, Vikrant Tongad on whose plea the court had issued the order and sought his response by September 23.

The translated draft was supposed to be available on the website of the ministry of environment, forest and climate change, Government of India as well as on websites of environment ministries of all states as well as those of state pollution control boards 10 days after the court had issued the order on June 30 when it was hearing a plea seeking an extension to respond to the EIA draft. The order was issued after taking into consideration the far-reaching impact of public consultation.

Centre had approached SC directly after the HC order but withdrew the appeal after the apex court asked the Centre to seek a review of the decision first.

The next hearing is scheduled on September 23.
