Agniveer soldier dies of ‘self-inflicted injury’ in Jammu and Kashmir, Congress points out ‘no guard of honour’

On not being given military honours, the Army says the cause of death was self-inflicted injury, the accompanying personnel were in civilian dress and as per the existing policy, no guard of honour or military honour was given to the deceased.

An Agniveer soldier died after being shot near the Line of Control (LOC) in Poonch district on Wednesday. As per the media reports, Agniveer was posted near the Line of Control in Mankot area of Poonch district and was on duty at the time of the incident.

In an unfortunate incident, Agniveer Amritpal Singh died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound while on sentry duty in Rajouri sector on October 11, an Army release said. Efforts are being made to find out the cause of death in the Court of Inquiry.

Congress points out “no guard of honour”

Congress spokesperson Supriya Shrinate surrounded the government by posting on social media platform X, “19 year old Amritpal Singh from Punjab joined the army as Agniveer. He was martyred after being shot in Kashmir on 10 October. Here his sisters are giving him shoulders. Neither military honor nor any army unit for them. They are martyrs – but this is the reality of Agniveer Yojana.”

Clarification by Indian Army

Seeing the increasing uproar, the Army has issued a clarification on the entire incident.

On the allegations of sending the mortal remains in a private ambulance, the Army said that the mortal remains of the deceased were taken in a civil hired ambulance by Agniveer’s unit. As per Army arrangements, Army personnel along with a Junior Commissioned Officer and four other rank officers also participated in the last rites along with the mortal remains.
