Shares of several water infrastructure companies surged in Wednesday’s trading session after the Union Cabinet approved a restructuring of the Jal Jeevan Mission, the Centre’s rural drinking water programme, paving the way for large-scale water supply projects across India.

The Cabinet, chaired by Narendra Modi, approved Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0, which will shift focus toward verifiable last-mile delivery and governance reforms rather than only infrastructure creation.

Water infra stocks rally

Following the announcement, multiple companies involved in water engineering, treatment, and infrastructure projects witnessed gains:

  • Denta Water and Infra Solutions shares rose 11.86%
  • Enviro Infra Engineers climbed 13.15%
  • Concord Enviro Systems gained 8.24%
  • VA Tech Wabag advanced 6.44%
  • Ion Exchange India moved up 5.51%
  • Jash Engineering also rose 6.80%

The broader Nifty 50 index was marginally lower during the session.

Jal Jeevan Mission 2.0 outlay

The government approved a total outlay of Rs 8.69 lakh crore for the next phase of the programme, including a central share of Rs 3.59 lakh crore, compared with Rs 2.08 lakh crore when the scheme was originally launched in 2019-20.

The mission aims to provide functional tap water connections to all rural households in India. According to the programme dashboard, 158.2 million rural households — about 81.5% of the total — currently have functional tap connections, compared with only 16.72% coverage at launch.

Digital governance framework

The revamped programme will introduce structural reforms including a national digital framework called “Sujalam Bharat.”

Under this system, every village will receive a unique service area ID, allowing authorities to digitally map water infrastructure from the source to the household level.

Officials say the digital framework is intended to improve governance, monitoring, and transparency while ensuring that water delivery systems are functioning effectively at the local level.

Community-led accountability

The government also plans to increase the role of Gram Panchayats and Village Water and Sanitation Committees in certifying project completion.

Villages will only declare themselves “Har Ghar Jal” once local authorities confirm that adequate in-village operation and maintenance systems are in place.

According to government estimates citing World Health Organization data, improved access to safe water under the programme has already helped save over 50.5 million hours of labour daily for women and could help prevent up to 400,000 diarrhoeal deaths.

The programme has been extended until December 2028, with the next phase expected to prioritise sustainable service delivery, monitoring, and community participation.
