In the latest incident concerning industrial mishaps, Coromandel International, a prominent fertilizer major, reported a gas leak from one of its delivery pipelines. The company promptly informed the Tamil Nadu Maritime Board about the situation, indicating the cancellation of the next shipment at its multi-buoy mooring system terminal due to abnormalities detected in the liquid ammonia delivery pipeline on December 26. The company assured that operations would resume only after rectifying the issues to the satisfaction and certification of relevant authorities.
The trouble unfolded when residents of the fishing village, Periyakuppam, near Ennore, began experiencing breathlessness and eye irritation. Subsequent investigations identified the gas leak as the cause, leading to the swift transportation of affected individuals to nearby hospitals. According to the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board (TNPCB), nearly 60 people reported health concerns, with 52 receiving treatment at the state-run Stanley Medical College and additional health camps addressing the situation.
On December 27, a day after the gas leak was reported, the TNPCB issued a statement assuring that the ammonia leak had been “completely arrested,” alleviating concerns and stating there was no need for panic. The Tamil Nadu Government directed Coromandel International to identify the precise location and extent of pipeline damage and rectify it before resuming ammonia transfer.
As of the latest update, shares of Coromandel International were trading at ₹1,249.55.
