Priyanka Chopra is set to make a special appearance in filmmaker Mira Nair’s upcoming biopic, Amri, which chronicles the life and legacy of the pioneering Hungarian-Indian painter Amrita Sher-Gil. Marking the first collaboration between Chopra and Nair, the cameo was filmed over a two-day schedule in Amritsar.

A Star-Studded Artistic Journey

The production has been a long-gestating passion project for Mira Nair, who has spent years crafting a narrative that traverses the painter’s life across Hungary, India, and France. While Tanya Maniktala has been cast as the titular painter, reuniting with Nair after their work on A Suitable Boy (2020), the project features an expansive ensemble. Industry reports indicate that Mira Nair has meticulously kept the details regarding the primary cast and narrative structure under wraps to maintain the film’s artistic integrity.

Filming Amidst Busy Schedules

Priyanka Chopra, currently balancing international commitments with her major role as Mandakini in SS Rajamouli’s upcoming action-adventure Varanasi (co-starring Mahesh Babu), took time out to complete her sequences for Amri. Sources close to the production noted that the cameo was a specific part designed by Nair, with Chopra flying to Amritsar immediately after finishing her work in Hyderabad. This quick turnaround reflects both the actress’s dedication to the project and the director’s specific vision for the cameo.

High Anticipation for Amri

The film explores the enigmatic life of Amrita Sher-Gil, a pivotal figure in 20th-century Indian modern art known for her oil paintings and cosmopolitan upbringing. By integrating a high-profile cameo like Chopra’s, Nair seems to be adding further depth to the film’s star-studded cast, which previously saw reports of interest from actors like Tabu and Naseeruddin Shah. As Amri moves through its production stages, the inclusion of Chopra has only intensified industry buzz surrounding this ambitious period piece, which is expected to offer a visually evocative look at one of India’s most significant cultural icons.
