How did Wade get to the MCU in ‘Deadpool and Wolverine?’

In Deadpool & Wolverine, the story kicks off six years after Wade Wilson hangs up his Deadpool mask. He’s retired from being the masked mercenary because he felt aimless, especially after being turned down by Jon Favreau’s Happy Hogan when he tried to join the Avengers.

To track down Hogan in this cameo-packed superhero extravaganza, Deadpool had to travel to Earth-616, which is essentially the main timeline for the Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) movies. This is the same Hogan we met in 2008’s Iron Man.

But how did Deadpool manage to jump from his own timeline, Earth-10005, to Earth-616? And does it even make sense?

How Did Deadpool Get to Earth-616?

At the end of 2018’s Deadpool 2, Deadpool uses Cable’s time-traveling device to fix some past mistakes. He goes back to kill an alternate version of himself from X-Men Origins: Wolverine and even prevents Ryan Reynolds from taking the role in Green Lantern.

It seems this time-travel device also has the ability to jump between different universes. That’s how Deadpool ends up in Earth-616, visiting the Avengers’ headquarters and trying to convince Hogan to let him join the team.

But this raises some big questions:

  • Where did this multiverse-jumping capability come from?
  • Why didn’t Deadpool use it to try to join different Avengers teams in other universes before?
  • And why did he need to steal a TVA TemPad to find other versions of Wolverine when he already had a device that could jump between universes?

The simplest solution might be to just go with the flow and enjoy the movie’s hilarious chaos. In short, Deadpool used Cable’s time-travel device to reach Earth-616, even if the details are a bit confusing. Maybe Deadpool 4 will clear up some of these quirks!
