Does ‘Grey’s Anatomy’ come on before ‘Station 19?’

In the golden age of shared universes on television, Grey’s Anatomy was a trailblazer among non-superhero shows, spawning multiple spin-offs. Station 19 followed in the footsteps of Private Practice, pivoting to a different group of first responders—firefighters. Premiering in 2018, the show featured Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital’s own Ben Warren, who decided it was time for a career change.

Over the years, several Grey’s Anatomy characters have made guest appearances on Station 19, creating a rich, interconnected universe. However, this fiery spin-off concluded its run with the finale of its seventh season, which aired on May 30, 2024.

The Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 Schedule on ABC

Under Krista Vernoff’s leadership as the showrunner for both Grey’s Anatomy and Station 19 from 2019 to 2023, the two shows were tightly interwoven. Their schedules were even coordinated to facilitate seamless crossover episodes: Station 19 aired at 8 PM, followed by Grey’s Anatomy at 9 PM. This setup allowed the storylines of the doctors and firefighters to blend smoothly, enhancing the shared universe experience.

However, things took a turn in the lead-up to Station 19‘s final season. ABC shifted the spin-off to a 10 PM time slot, following Grey’s Anatomy. This change resulted in only one crossover episode for the season, culminating in Ben Warren’s decision to return to Seattle Grace to complete his surgical residency.

The schedule change, announced in November 2023, seemed to spell trouble for Station 19. This foreboding was confirmed a month later when ABC announced it would not renew the show for another season. Adding salt to the wound, ABC rescued the procedural drama 9-1-1, which had been canceled by Fox, giving it a seventh season and awarding it Station 19’s coveted 8 PM time slot. Meanwhile, Grey’s Anatomy was, unsurprisingly, renewed for another season. Talk about a dramatic plot twist!
