On March 12, onlookers gathered in Midtown as Johnson, 35, and her co-star Josh Hartnett, 46, filmed a dramatic opening sequence featuring a bloody crash scene. Videos of the shoot quickly went viral, capturing Johnson in a business casual outfit consisting of burnt orange pants, a trench coat, and bloodied headphones, while Hartnett appeared in a full suit.
Verity is based on Colleen Hoover’s 2018 novel of the same name, and the filmed crash sequence mirrors the book’s opening. The story follows Lowen, played by Johnson, a struggling writer who witnesses a fatal accident on her way to a publisher meeting. Unbeknownst to her, the man she meets after the incident, Jeremy (Hartnett), is the very person she is scheduled to meet. Jeremy later recruits Lowen to ghostwrite for his wife Verity, played by Anne Hathaway, whose true condition remains ambiguous.
This adaptation marks the second of Hoover’s novels to make it to the big screen, following It Ends With Us. Production for Verity began in New York City last month, with early set photos showing Hathaway and Hartnett filming a sequence where they ran through the city streets.
Hathaway, 42, is also producing the film through her company, Somewhere Pictures, and Johnson has been named an executive producer. Verity is directed by Michael Showalter, marking his second collaboration with Hathaway.
