Chris Evans is set to return to the romantic comedy genre with The Materialists, where he will be caught in a love triangle with Dakota Johnson and Pedro Pascal. The first trailer for the A24 film was released on Tuesday, March 18, giving audiences a glimpse into the world of high-stakes matchmaking in New York City.
The film follows Johnson’s character, Lucy, a successful matchmaker who has orchestrated nearly ten marriages. However, her own love life takes an unexpected turn when she meets a mysterious businessman, played by Pascal, at a wedding. Just as romance begins to blossom, Lucy discovers that the event’s server is none other than her ex-boyfriend, John, portrayed by Evans.
As Lucy is drawn to Pascal’s character, John challenges her intentions, questioning whether she is truly in love or simply captivated by wealth and charm. In an emotional moment, he expresses his feelings, telling her that when he looks at her, he envisions a future filled with family and children. Meanwhile, Lucy finds herself doubting her professional abilities, confessing that her once-reliable matchmaking skills may no longer be as effective.
The film is directed, written, and produced by Celine Song, whose 2023 feature debut Past Lives received critical acclaim and multiple award nominations, including Best Picture and Best Original Screenplay. According to The Hollywood Reporter, Song previously revealed that directing her first film made her realize she wanted to continue filmmaking for the rest of her life.
Pascal, in an interview with GQ, described Past Lives as one of his favorite films and shared that he and Song became close friends even before he joined The Materialists. He expressed admiration for her talent, stating that he would be willing to take on any project she envisioned.
Produced by David Hinojosa of 2AM and Killer Films, The Materialists is set to hit theaters nationwide on June 13.
