Captain America: Brave New World: Release date, trailer, plot details, cast and everything we know so far!

Get ready, because our beloved star-spangled hero is coming back to the big screen soon! Originally called “Captain America: New World Order,” the upcoming film has been retitled “Captain America: Brave New World.” This movie will feature Anthony Mackie as Sam Wilson, who has taken up the Captain America mantle after the events of the Disney+ series “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier.”

The new Captain America movie was announced at San Diego Comic-Con in 2022 as part of the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five. During the event, Marvel Studios President Kevin Feige unveiled a whole lineup of exciting projects in the works.

In “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier,” we saw Sam Wilson embrace his role as the new Captain America, with help from Sebastian Stan’s Bucky Barnes. Initially, the two characters didn’t get along, but they eventually formed a strong bond. Emily VanCamp appeared as Sharon Carter, a former S.H.I.E.L.D. agent and Peggy Carter’s niece. The series also introduced Wyatt Russell as John Walker, who started as a replacement Captain America but became the villainous U.S. Agent. Additionally, Daniel Brühl returned as the classic villain Baron Zemo from “Captain America: Civil War.”

Not all cast members from the series have been confirmed for the movie, leading to much speculation. Here’s what we know so far about “Captain America: Brave New World.”

What is the Captain America: Brave New World release date?

“Captain America: Brave New World” is now set to hit theaters on February 14, 2025. The release date has been pushed back several times. Initially, it was scheduled for May 3, 2024, then moved to July 26, 2024, before finally settling on its current February 2025 release date. Marvel has made several changes to their film schedule recently, and “Captain America: Brave New World” is one of the movies affected by these adjustments.

On its release date, “Captain America: Brave New World” will be competing with “The Smurf Movie,” featuring Rihanna, and the romantic comedy sequel “Bridget Jones: Mad About the Boy.”

Captain America: Brave New World trailer

On July 12, 2024, Marvel Studios dropped the teaser trailer for “Captain America: Brave New World.” The trailer starts with Sam Wilson meeting President Thunderbolt Ross at the White House. Ross suggests that Captain America should be part of the military, telling Sam, “Work with me, Sam. We’ll show the world a better way forward.”

Next, the trailer shows Sam and Joaquin Torres at an event hosted by Ross. Suddenly, Isiah Bradley stands up and attacks the president. The scene quickly shifts to a montage where Sam tells Ross that his inner circle has been compromised. During this montage, we catch brief glimpses of The Leader and a new villain played by an actor from “Breaking Bad.”

The montage ends with Ross telling Sam, “You may be Captain America, but you’re not Steve Rogers.” Sam confidently replies, “You’re right. I’m not.” The trailer concludes with a dramatic tease of the Red Hulk, who violently throws Captain America’s shield into the concrete.

The official plot synopsis for Captain America: Brave New World by Marvel Studios states:

After meeting with newly elected U.S. President Thaddeus Ross, played by Harrison Ford in his Marvel Cinematic Universe debut, Sam finds himself in the middle of an international incident. He must discover the reason behind a nefarious global plot before the true mastermind has the entire world seeing red.

At San Diego Comic-Con in 2022, director Julias Onah described “Captain America: Brave New World” as a “paranoid thriller.” This suggests the film might follow in the footsteps of “Captain America: The Winter Soldier,” a highly acclaimed MCU movie inspired by 1970s political espionage thrillers like “Three Days of the Condor.” The Winter Soldier even cast Robert Redford, the star of “Three Days of the Condor,” as the villain Alexander Pierce. The Captain America films have often explored themes of broken political systems and government distrust, and it looks like Sam Wilson will face similar challenges in this new installment.

Harrison Ford will be taking on the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross, following the passing of William Hurt, who played Ross in four previous films. Fans might remember that Ross threw Wilson in prison at the end of “Civil War” for violating the Sokovia Accords. Executive producer Nate Moore mentioned that Sam Wilson and Thunderbolt Ross will clash in the movie. Moore hinted at the dynamic, saying, “Sam Wilson’s Captain America will bring his own team to the table… There will be some natural sparks there, which I think will be really fun.”

Anthony Mackie also gave some insights into the relationship between Wilson and Ross. He said, “Ross and Cap have always had that relationship where they were friends and respected each other, but they always bumped heads. That’s their relationship in the storyline.”

Interestingly, due to prior licensing agreements, Happy Meal toys at McDonald’s were released in late April 2024, confirming that Harrison Ford’s Thunderbolt Ross will undergo a gamma-fueled transformation into the Red Hulk in the movie.

Captain America: Brave New World cast details

The new Captain America, played by Anthony Mackie, is ready to take the spotlight. Joining him from “The Falcon and the Winter Soldier” series are Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres and Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley. Additionally, two actors from 2008’s “The Incredible Hulk” are making a comeback: Tim Blake Nelson as the villain Samuel “Leader” Sterns and Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, Thunderbolt Ross’s daughter.

Tim Blake Nelson shared his excitement about returning to the role after over a decade in an interview with ScreenRant:

“Very excited about it. I’m headed to Atlanta tomorrow to continue working on that. It’s been very exciting to bring back a character from 16 years ago and imagine how he has aged with me and how that has manifested. The Marvel team has come up with a really interesting explanation—revelation, I should say, as to what he’s been up to for 16 years and why.”

Harrison Ford was announced to take over the role of General Thaddeus “Thunderbolt” Ross in 2022. In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Ford explained why he accepted the role:

“I watch all these terrific actors having a good time in Marvel movies. I like doing something different to what I’ve done and pleasing people. So I’ll try a piece of that.”

Anthony Mackie also praised Ford and shared a heartfelt Instagram post of the two together, giving fans a glimpse of Sam Wilson’s new suit.

The cast is further expanded with Shira Haas, acclaimed for her role in Netflix’s “Unorthodox,” joining as Sabra, Marvel’s first Israeli superheroine and a mutant. Giancarlo Esposito, famous for his roles in “Breaking Bad,” “Better Call Saul,” and “The Mandalorian,” will also appear in an antagonistic role. At the 2024 Phoenix Fan Fusion convention, Esposito hinted:

“The MCU has knocked on my door and it’s a role you won’t predict. It will be teased and there will be a series afterwards.”

Xosha Roquemore (known from “The Mindy Project”) and Rosa Salazar (from “Alita: Battle Angel”) are also part of the cast in undisclosed roles. However, Sebastian Stan will not return as Bucky Barnes in this film, as the Winter Soldier will appear in the “Thunderbolts” film, led by Val (Julia Louis-Dreyfus). WWE star Seth Rollins has also joined the film, with many speculating he will play a villain.

When and Where Did ‘Captain America: Brave New World Film’?

Reports about the film first surfaced in early 2021, with principal photography kicking off on March 21, 2023, at Trilith Studios in Atlanta, Georgia, under the working title “Rochelle Rochelle.” Anthony Mackie was seen on set in a new costume on May 16, 2023, and you can check out the behind-the-scenes footage here.

By late June 2023, cinematographer Kramer Morgenthau announced on Instagram that filming for “Captain America: Brave New World” had wrapped.

In December 2023, it was revealed that the movie would undergo extensive reshoots and rewrites, with Matthew Orton, known for his work on “Moon Knight,” brought on to write additional material. The reshoots began in late May 2024 and lasted 22 days. While reshoots can sometimes worry fans, those for “Brave New World” were not as extensive as those for other recent Marvel movies like “Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness” and “The Marvels.”

In May 2024, Empire provided a behind-the-scenes look at director Julias Onah working with Anthony Mackie and Xosha Roquemore on the set of “Brave New World.”
