‘Mukti Caravan’, an anti-child trafficking drive launched in Bihar by Kailash Satyarthi’s Foundation


Kailash Satyarthi Foundation launched a campaign against child trafficking in Bihar on Tuesday over a webinar hosted by Kailash Satyarthi Children’s Foundation (KSCF).

The KSCF, founded by Nobel Peace Laureate, Kailash Satyarthi has been working towards ensuring a child-friendly world has been running a campaign called ‘Mukti Caravan in various parts of the country for many years. Today it was launched digitally in Bihar, a state which the foundation claims to be among the worst affected by child trafficking. The campaign intends to create awareness among people regarding COVID-19 safety, child trafficking, and child labor in Bihar.

The webinar was attended by senior officials of the state and members of the legislature, among others.

“We are launching this campaign from those districts of Bihar from where a large number of children are trafficked to other parts of India every year. We all have to take action against this social evil,” said Arbind Kumar Sharma, a former rescued child laborer, and current youth activist.

According to Bidhan Chandra Singh, Executive Director of KSCF Bihar has shown a rise in child trafficking incidents and that the state is also prone to have socio-economic consequences as millions of migrant workers returned home during the lockdown.

Addressing the webinar, N Vijayalakshmi, principal secretary, animal husbandry department said, “A lot of work has been done but a lot more needs to be done. Until we do not reduce poverty, illiteracy, and unemployment among the parents, we cannot strike at the root of the problem.”

Pramila Kumar Prajapati, chairperson of the State Commission for Protecting Children’s Rights, State Legal Services Authority secretary Sunil Datt, Congress MLA Shakeel Ahmed Khan, JD(U)’s Ranju Geeta, Vyas, chairperson of the State Disaster Management Authority, and Dhananjay Tingal, executive director of Bachpan Bachao Andolan are the other people who took part in the webinar

The campaign is expected to be another milestone in the direction of eradication of child labor by creating an efficient system in place. The foundation has been working at the forefront of movements too end child slavery, trafficking, forced labor, violence and other heinous crimes against children and has led successfully the 100 Million Campaign, Bharat Yatra, Rape Free India Campaign to name a few.
