Mumbai, the financial capital of India, is grappling with an unprecedented deluge as it witnesses the wettest July in history. However, the rain gauges in Santacruz have been overwhelmed this year, registering an astounding 1557.8mm of rainfall from 1st July to 26th July 8.30 am. The record-breaking rainfall surpassed the 1500mm mark for the first time in the city’s history, with the previous record being 1454.5mm set in July 2005.
The situation has become dire as the city experiences heavy flooding, waterlogging, and traffic disruptions across various regions. The continuous torrential rains have led to water levels rising dangerously in low-lying areas, posing a serious threat to residents and property. Local authorities and disaster management teams are working round the clock to address the emergencies and ensure the safety of the citizens.
The challenges presented by the current monsoon season have been compounded by the recent heavy downpour on 26th July 2023, when Santacruz alone recorded an astonishing 1557.8mm of rainfall. This new record highlights the severity and intensity of this year’s monsoon in Mumbai.
Recalling the infamous deluge of 2005, when Mumbai witnessed an unprecedented 944mm of rainfall in a single day, the city is now facing another significant climatic event. Although this year’s daily rainfall on a single day might not have surpassed the 2005 record, the cumulative rainfall for July has already surpassed that of the entire July 2020.
In light of the precarious situation, the BMC has taken proactive measures to mitigate the impact of the rains. They have urged residents to remain indoors and avoid venturing outside unless it is an absolute necessity or an emergency. The cautionary advisory comes as the city faces disruptions in transportation, power supply, and essential services.
