With over 71,000 complaints in May and June, Google takes down 1.54 lakh content pieces in India

Google released a transparency report as part of its compliance with new IT rules in India.

According to Google, India’s latest transparency report, in the span of two months, Google India took down over 1.54 lakh articles after receiving 71,148 complaints from individual users.

The report which was released on Friday also informed that the US-based company had removed 6,34,357 pieces of content in May and 5,26,866 in June due to automated detection.

It stated, “This includes using automated detection processes for some of our products to prevent the dissemination of harmful content such as child sexual abuse material and violent extremist content.”

Automation detection enables the tech company to act promptly as well as accurately to enforce their guidelines and policies.

In May, a total of 34,883 complaints were registered by individual users from India through designated mechanism leading to the removal of 71,132 content pieces. The company removed content pieces under categories like copyright (70,365), trademark (753), counterfeit (5), other legal (4), circumvention (3) and graphic sexual content (2).

Furthermore, the month of June witnessed an increase in the number of reports i.e. 36,265, the highest so far, resulting in the suspension of 83,613 pieces of content.

For June, categories for the removal of contents remained almost similar to May with copyright standing at 83,054, trademark (532), counterfeit (14), circumvention (4), impersonation (3), other legal (2), graphic sexual content (1) and defamation (1).

The new IT rules have instructed large digital platforms with more than five million users to release monthly periodic compliance reports alongside the details of complaints received and action initiated.
