On Thursday, E-commerce giant Flipkart and fashion e-tailer Myntra affirmed that they have partnered with not-for-profit environmental organization Canopy to stretch their sustainability commitment to move towards sustainable packaging and material sourcing.
According to a statement cited by Moneycontrol as signatories of Canopy’s Pack4Good (packaging) and Canopy Style (fashion) initiatives, the two Flipkart group companies will move towards sustainable sourcing of forest-derived products and will further pilot alternative next-generation solutions to transition away from forests from raw materials.
The statement further added, “Flipkart and Myntra recognize the role of the world’s forest in maintaining climate stability, preserving biodiversity, and protecting the rights of Indigenous communities.”
As per reports, Flipkart and Myntra in the following three years will concentrate on activities like exploring, sourcing, designing reusable/refillable shipping boxes to minimize corrugated paper and paperboard thereby encouraging the use of recycled, reusable and FSC certified paper and packaging.
In addition, the partnership will look forward to sourcing products with responsibly sourced man-made cellulosic fibers. This association will further focus on designing and implementing e-commerce, shipping, display, and wrapping systems that reduce the use of packaging materials, increasing utilization of recycled materials in packaging along with utilizing reusable packaging systems for intra-business applications.
As per the statement, both platforms will also increase the use of digital communication, marketing, and accounting systems, adopts best practices that involve researching and applying emerging and circular economy innovations. They are also expected to increase the use of responsibly sourced man-made cellulosic fiber for its in-house products which include rayon/viscose, lyocell, and modal.
Recently, the two platforms too disclosed their proposal to shift away from single-use plastics in their packaging by bringing in scalable sustainable alternatives such as eco-friendly paper shreds, replacing poly pouches with recycled paper bags, replacing bubble wraps with carton waste shredded material, and 2 ply roll among the other measures.

Neetu Jotwani, Vice President and Head of Sourcing at Myntra said that the association with Canopy following the adoption of CanopyStyle for fashion and Pack4Good for packaging is a major step forward to achieve its goal of eliminating single plastic use and thereby increasing environment-friendly practices.
