The Financial Times reported on Saturday that Facebook parent company Meta Platforms Inc has delayed finalising budgets for several departments as it prepares for a new round of layoffs.

According to two Meta workers familiar with the issue, there has been a lack of clarity in recent weeks regarding finances and future personnel counts.

Outside of normal business hours, Meta did not react quickly to a Reuters request for comment.

Meta said earlier this month that it anticipates its 2023 spending to range between $89 billion and $95 billion, with CEO Mark Zuckerberg referring to the time as a “Year of Efficiency.”

In November, WhatsApp lost more than 11,000 positions, or 13% of its employees, following in the footsteps of big businesses like Amazon.com Inc. and Microsoft Corp., which announced thousands of layoffs due to the economic slump.
