Larsen & Toubro (L&T) commissioned a new green hydrogen plant in Hazira, Gujarat, on Saturday. The revelation comes just five months after the company announced a joint venture with Indian Oil Corporation (IOC) and ReNew Power to produce green hydrogen.
Shrikant Madhav Vaidya, chairman of IOC, inaugurated the green hydrogen plant on Saturday. This plant will generate 45 kg of green hydrogen per day for use in the company’s Hazira manufacturing complex.
The green hydrogen plant is planned to have an electrolyzer capacity of 800 kW, with alkaline (380 kW) and polymer electrolyte membrane (420 kW) technologies used. It will be powered by a 990kW peak DC rooftop solar plant and a 500kWh battery energy storage system (BESS).
A 380 kW alkaline electrolyser was installed as part of the first phase of the project, with a 420 kW PEM electrolyser and solar plant capacity augmentation to 1.6 MW peak DC planned for future expansion.
This initiative is in line with L&T’s Lakshya-2026 climate leadership targets. The scope of the project includes the production of high purity green hydrogen (99.99%) and oxygen, as well as their captive consumption in the manufacturing shops.
According to Subramanian Sarma, a whole-time director & senior executive vice president (Energy), L&T, a fuel blend of 15% hydrogen and natural gas will be used, and oxygen will supplement the existing usage in cutting and welding applications.
The plant design incorporates both active and passive safety systems and will be operated via state-of-the-art control systems with remote monitoring functionality to ensure safe operation and production.
Furthermore, L&T’s integrated data analytics platform will provide insights into the performance of the electrolyzers and the overall plant.
L&T has pledged to achieve water neutrality by 2035 and carbon neutrality by 2040 as part of its ESG commitments. Making Green Hydrogen a key component of its clean fuel adoption strategy.
