Vedanta Aluminium is actively addressing a breach in its process water storage pond at the Lanjigarh alumina refinery, following unprecedented weather conditions in the early hours of September 15, 2024.

Despite recent inspections showing no signs of seepage, the unexpected incident led to an overflow of water, impacting agricultural areas in the vicinity. The company promptly informed state administration officials and mobilised its teams to manage the situation and minimise any adverse effects.

Vedanta Aluminium has prioritised the safety and well-being of the community and personnel, reporting no injuries or loss of livestock due to the breach. Immediate containment measures were initiated, and the company is providing safe drinking water to the affected villages. Relief materials, including food, water, and other essential supplies, are being distributed to support impacted families.

Furthermore, Vedanta Aluminium is working closely with local government authorities to determine compensation for affected farmers and villagers. The agreed compensation scheme offers INR 20,000 per hectare for agricultural land and INR 12,000 per hectare for non-agricultural land affected by the incident.

A Vedanta Aluminium spokesperson stated, “The safety and well-being of our community and personnel remain our highest priority. We are committed to managing the situation effectively and providing the necessary support and compensation to those impacted.”
