Tata Consultancy Services (TCS), a global leader in IT services and consulting, has joined hands with the Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IIT-K) to tackle one of India’s most urgent challenges: sustainable urbanization. The collaboration is part of the AIRAWAT Research Foundation initiative, established by IIT Kanpur with support from the Ministry of Education and the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs, aiming to reimagine urban development in India.

With the United Nations projecting that 68% of the world’s population will live in cities by 2050—and India alone adding 416 million urban residents—issues like mobility, pollution, energy use, and governance are set to grow. The TCS-IIT-K partnership will leverage AI and advanced technologies to address these challenges at scale.

TCS will deploy digital twin technologies to enable rapid “what-if” simulations, helping urban planners test solutions before implementation. The collaboration will also use AI and remote sensing to create high-resolution air quality maps, predict and manage urban flooding, and optimize green spaces for reduced carbon footprints.

By combining research-driven insights with advanced technology, the partnership aims to create cities that are resilient, equitable, and environmentally sustainable, redefining the future of urban living in India.
