State-run miner NMDC reported a sharp rise in iron ore production and sales for May 2025, with output jumping 89% year-on-year to 4.43 million tonnes, compared to 2.34 million tonnes in the same month last year. Sales for the month also saw a significant rise to 4.34 million tonnes, up from 2.82 million tonnes in May 2024.

The surge in performance was driven by higher output in Chhattisgarh, where production more than doubled to 3.06 million tonnes from 1.27 million tonnes a year ago. Karnataka mines contributed 1.37 million tonnes in May, up from 1.07 million tonnes last year.

For the first two months of the current financial year (April–May FY26), NMDC’s cumulative production stood at 8.43 million tonnes, up from 5.82 million tonnes in the same period of FY25. Cumulative sales during this period rose to 7.94 million tonnes from 6.35 million tonnes.

Chhattisgarh accounted for the bulk of the production with 5.91 million tonnes during the two-month period, followed by Karnataka at 2.52 million tonnes.

The continued momentum reflects improved operational efficiency and strong demand from the steel sector. NMDC remains India’s largest iron ore producer and a key supplier to domestic steel manufacturers.
