The Dangote Group has once again taken a decisive step toward reshaping Africa’s energy future by announcing a massive expansion of its flagship refinery and petrochemical complex in Nigeria. Headquartered in Lagos, the Dangote Group is Africa’s leading multinational conglomerate with diversified interests across upstream oil and gas, mining, petrochemicals, fertilizers, cement, sugar, and food processing. Operating in 17 African countries, the Group is among the region’s largest employers and industrial powerhouses.
At the heart of this transformation lies the iconic Dangote Refinery, located in the Lekki Free Zone. Commissioned in 2024, the 650,000 barrels-per-day integrated refinery and petrochemical complex is the world’s largest single-train refinery. The facility produces Euro-V quality gasoline, diesel, jet fuel, and polypropylene, positioning Nigeria as a critical player in the global downstream energy market.
A key contributor to this engineering milestone has been Engineers India Limited (EIL). A premier engineering consultancy under the Ministry of Petroleum & Natural Gas, Government of India, EIL has a long-standing reputation for delivering complex energy and industrial projects worldwide. With expertise spanning the full project lifecycle—from concept design to commissioning—EIL has delivered landmark assets across oil and gas, refining, petrochemicals, fertilizers, metallurgy, infrastructure, and renewable energy.
EIL partnered with the Dangote Group as Project Management Consultant (PMC) and EPCM Consultant for the original 650,000 barrels-per-day refinery project. The successful delivery of this mega facility not only transformed Nigeria’s energy landscape but also elevated Africa’s standing as a hub for world-class hydrocarbon and petrochemical infrastructure. The project stands as a testament to EIL’s engineering excellence, execution leadership, and ability to manage projects of extraordinary scale and complexity.
Building on this success, Dangote has unveiled an ambitious capacity expansion plan. The refinery’s capacity is set to increase from 650,000 barrels per day to an unprecedented 1.4 million barrels per day under Train-2, with the production of cleaner Euro-VI grade fuels. In parallel, polypropylene capacity will expand from 830 kTPA to 2.4 MMTPA through the revamp of the existing Polypropylene Unit and the installation of an additional 1.2 MMTPA PPU. The project also includes a world-scale 750 kTPA UOP Oleflex unit to strengthen propylene feedstock integration.
Reaffirming its confidence in EIL, the Dangote Group has signed a fresh contract valued at more than US $350 million, appointing EIL once again as PMC and EPCM Consultant for this landmark expansion. This agreement highlights the deep trust placed in EIL’s multidisciplinary capabilities and global project execution model.
Once completed, the expansion will position Dangote as the world’s largest petroleum refinery at a single location. It is expected to significantly boost fuel availability within Africa, reduce dependence on imported refined products, and enhance regional energy security. Beyond fuels, the expanded petrochemical capacity will support downstream manufacturing and industrial growth across the continent.
This new phase of development is widely regarded as a project of global significance. The proposed 1.4 million barrels-per-day integrated complex will rank among the largest and most advanced refinery and petrochemical hubs in the world.
