In a fresh development, HDFC Bank’s outgoing chairman Atanu Chakraborty has clarified that his resignation is not linked to any wrongdoing within the bank, even as he reiterated concerns about internal developments not aligning with his personal values.
Speaking in a recent interview on March 19, Chakraborty stated, “I am not pointing out any wrongdoings at the bank,” while adding that HDFC Bank remains an institution he has nurtured over the past five years.
In his resignation letter dated March 17, Chakraborty had noted that certain developments within the bank over the last two years were “not in congruence with my personal values and ethics.” He clarified that there were no other material reasons behind his decision to step down.
This distinction is significant, as it separates his exit from allegations of governance lapses or financial irregularities, even though the wording of his initial letter had triggered market concerns.
The resignation comes at a critical time for HDFC Bank, which is still navigating the integration of HDFC Ltd following their merger. The consolidation created one of India’s largest financial entities, but the expected synergies and benefits are yet to fully reflect in operational performance.
Chakraborty’s comments suggest that the transition phase may have presented challenges, although he did not elaborate on specific issues.
