The BIS teams have claimed that they have seized non-hallmarked 916 fineness gold coins which the jewellers were found selling.

The BIS stands for Bureau of Indian Standards. It is primarily responsible for issuing national standards for quality, weight etc of different products. It is also responsible for ensuring compliance with its standards. It conducts raids and detects and punishes violators of its provisions.

The BIS Act 2016 created BIS, the National Standard Body of India, to promote the smooth growth of the operations of standardisation, marking, and quality certification of goods, as well as for matters related to or incidental to such activities.

The BIS Registration is good for two years and can be renewed after that. A minimal amount of paperwork and money are required for renewal. It is not necessary for it to test the sample.

These raids have come soon after the government announced a slew of measures to restrict gold imports in India.
