Apple recently launched the iOS 17.3 beta 2 for developers and the public via the Apple Beta Software Program. However, users quickly reported a significant bug causing iPhone boot loops after installing the beta update. In response, Apple has withdrawn the iOS 17.3 beta 2 update and is actively investigating the reported issues.
Numerous iPhone users, spanning models from iPhone 12 to iPhone 15, shared their experiences on social media platforms, noting that their devices entered a continuous loop following the iOS 17.3 beta 2 update. The prevalent solution appeared to be a forced factory reset and flashing a restored image, likely iOS 17.3 beta 1, from a Mac or PC.
Although not all users encountered the boot loop problem, Apple has halted the distribution of iOS 17.3 beta 2. Developer Guilherme Rambo shared insights on Mastodon, suggesting that the boot loop may be linked to a crash in backboardd, particularly affecting those with the “Back Tap” feature enabled. Apple is actively examining this issue and is anticipated to resolve the bug before re-releasing the beta version in the near future.
On the positive side, the upcoming iOS 17.3 update will introduce two significant features for iPhone users – Stolen Device Protection and Collaborative Playlist.
The first optional feature enhances security by requiring Face ID or Touch ID authentication for critical actions, even if the passcode is known. Users must authenticate for tasks like viewing passwords, resetting the device, or using saved payment methods. For crucial actions such as modifying the Apple ID password or disabling Find My, Stolen Device Protection imposes a one-hour waiting period after biometric verification, adding an extra layer of defense against unauthorized access.
Another notable feature in the iOS 17.3 update is Collaborative Playlist for Apple Music. Originally introduced at WWDC 2023, this feature allows users to create and interact with shared playlists. Although initially tested in iOS 17.2, Apple removed it from the final release and plans to reintroduce it with iOS 17.3.
It’s important to note that iOS 17.3 Beta 2 is not the final version, and Apple may introduce additional features before the official release of the software update for iPhone users.
