Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued alerts for heavy to very heavy rains in various parts of Maharashtra.

Mumbai received heavy to very heavy rainfall on Tuesday with an average rainfall being recorded at 88.24mm.

The weather department has forecasted the rainfall and issued a ‘red’ alert in Palghar and Raigad whereas an ‘orange’ alert for Mumbai and Ratnagiri.

Furthermore, IMD has also cautioned regarding isolated instances of extremely heavy precipitation over the Konkan region on July 19, which corresponds to a high amount of over 204.44mm rainfall in a single day.

Scientist at IMD in Mumbai said, “A low pressure area is developing in the Bay of Bengal, which will strengthen the offshore monsoon trough near Maharashtra. When this system moves closer toward the shore or inland around July 18, Mumbai and adjacent parts of the Konkan will see a monsoon revival.”

District collector of Palghar has urged the people to remain cautious as Palghar and Thane district will remain under same alert on July 20 whereas Raigad will remain under orange alert till July 21. He has urged people to stay indoors and not venture out near water bodies.

Matheran hill station near Raigad which is a popular tourist destination experienced a heavy downpour of 9cm under the span of 24 hours, concluding at 8:30 am on Monday. Thane district received a rainfall of 46.4mm.

In the upcoming week, Mumbai is expected to witness maximum temperatures ranging between 28 to 29 degree Celsius and minimum temperatures will hover around 24 degrees. The skies will be cloudy resulting in limited to no sunlight as per the weather department.

Mumbai local trains are also facing disruption due to heavy downpours as commuters claim a 20 to 25 minutes delay.
