Due to the situation in Ukraine, YouTube, the company controlled by Alphabet Inc’s Google is bans channels associated with Russian state-backed media outlets Russia Today (RT) and Sputnik across Europe, effective immediately.
YouTube’s spokesperson issued a formal statement regarding this issue. The statement said, “It’ll take time for our systems to fully ramp up. Our teams continue to monitor the situation around the clock to take swift action.”
The move follows YouTube’s announcement that it will discontinue monetising RT’s main channel. The action comes as major technology corporations become embroiled in the Russia-Ukraine conflict. Meanwhile, Twitter has announced that tweets from Russian-state-affiliated media would be labelled more prominently.
Meanwhile, on Monday, Nathaniel Gleicher, the Head of Security Policy at Meta, Facebook’s parent company, tweeted that the firm had discovered the Ghostwriter hacker group, which was aiming to ‘compromise’ the accounts of key military and public leaders in Ukraine.
Russia has also attempted to get Facebook to fact-check and label information published by four Russian state-owned media outlets. Facebook, on the other hand, has stated that it would not comply with these demands.
Meanwhile, Twitter Inc has also said that tweets containing information from Russian state-controlled media would be labelled and their visibility will be reduced.
