UN to discuss draft resolution over limiting veto power of permanent members of Security Council

The Liechtenstein proposal is backed by 50 countries including the United States.

On Tuesday, April 19, the United Nations called for UN General Assembly to discuss a draft resolution- the Liechtenstein proposal, regarding mandatory justification by the five permanent members on using the veto.

This has been a topic of the debate for a long time but has been again revived due to the Russia-Ukraine war. As Russia invaded Ukraine, the members of the United Nations have tried to punish Russia several times but Moscow being a permanent member of the council uses its veto power to null the resolution.
