Ukrainian forces retreats from Avdiivka amid conflict

Ukrainian Chief of General Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi announced the retreat from Avdiivka due to operational concerns. Zelensky stressed the need for weapon support, cautioning against undermining democracies and urging increased aid.

Ukrainian Chief of General Staff Oleksandr Syrskyi declared the retreat of Ukrainian forces from Avdiivka, a significant town central to the ongoing conflict in the area. The Ukrainian military withdrew its forces from the heavily damaged town of Avdiivka in Donetsk to prevent encirclement and safeguard the lives of its soldiers, stated the army’s commander-in-chief. In a brief Facebook post, Syrskyi explained that the decision aimed to protect servicemen’s lives and well-being, with troops relocating to more advantageous positions.
Syrskyi conveyed that, in light of the operational circumstances surrounding Avdiivka and with the objective of preventing encirclement while prioritizing the safety and well-being of their troops, he had decided to pull back their units from the city. He stated the intention to transition to a defensive stance at more strategically favorable locations. Additionally, he mentioned implementing measures to stabilize the situation and maintain their current positions, reaffirming Ukraine’s determination to retake Avdiivka.

Avdiivka has been fiercely contested since Russian-backed forces took control of parts of the Donbas region, including Donetsk, in 2014. It has remained under constant threat since Russia’s full-scale invasion began in February 2022. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy emphasized that Ukraine’s weapon shortage, notably in artillery and long-range strike capabilities, allows Putin to adapt to the ongoing hostilities. He cautioned against weakening democracies, stating it undermines collective efforts and democratic nations’ shared objectives.

Zelensky reiterated his plea for increased military support from Western countries, highlighting Ukraine’s ability to confront Russian forces effectively.
