On Monday Pope Francis was doing well after his surgery for an inflamed colon, a large one. The Vatican mentioned that the 84-year-old Pope Francis was supposed to recover in 7 days in the hospital.
The pontiff had been admitted to Gemelli Hospital in Rome to schedule an operation under general anesthetic for the symptoms of diverticular stenosis of the colon.
Matteo Bruni in a statement mentioned that Pope Francis is in a good condition, he is alert and breathing spontaneously. He also added that the surgery had lasted 3 hours.
He lastly added saying that approximately a 7-day stay is expected, barring complications, for the Pope.
A week earlier, during the eve of the feast of Saints Peter and Paul, the Pope trying to give a hint about the upcoming Operation. He said, ” I ask you to pray for the pope, pray in a special way. The pope needs your prayers”.
Mario Draghi, Prime Minister of Italy sent Francis his wishes to get well soon on Monday. The Grand Imam of Al-Azhar, Sheikh Ahmed el Tayyab who is the leading authority of Muslims wished the pontiff for a speedy recovery as well.
The late Pope underwent the surgery seven times, including an attempt on life in the year 1981 and for a tumor in his colon in 1992.
The Pope Francis’s condition causes potentially a painful inflammation of diverticulum, which is a pocket that can form on the colon walls which multiplies with age. As per the American Society of Colon and Rectal Surgeons, the condition might have caused high blood pressure in the colon or low dietary intake of fibers and high red meat intake.
