The South China Sea, which has been the hotbed of disputes and conflicts for decades, especially and mostly involving China and its neighboring countries, who are often at loggerheads with the regime on various territorial wrangles, has seen another huge strategic move, this time from the US, more specifically the US navy. The US navy has managed to send two mammoth aircraft carriers to the contentious zone, as apart of a military drill.
Although such military drills are common, the need for such a fortification and sophistication of the drill usually plays a political role than just a routine followed by armed forces. This, as the specifications of the location of the drill in the sea, is yet to be disclosed. This is also, by many is seen as a move to alert china and espouse its counterparts and neighboring countries, locked in disputes with China.
In a statement to CNN, Lt. Joe Jeiley, a spokesman for the Seventh Fleet. said: “The USS Nimitz and USS Ronald Reagan Carrier Strike Groups are conducting dual-carrier operations in the Philippine Sea and the South China Sea,”
The South China sea, as the world knows it, is known by various names, in accordance to the country concerned, as the sea with covers an area 1,500 KM(900 miles), has many claimants, including, of course, China, which, maintains the claim of having right over 90% of the 900 miles of the sea to its jurisdiction.
In a report by The Wall Street Journal, The exercise is long-planned but comes as China conducts military drills of its own in the area, near the contested Paracel Islands, exercises that have been criticized by the US and other countries.
This development comes into frame, as it was last week that, China declared a plan for a five-day drill from the 1st of July near Paracel Islands, which is claimed by both China and Vietnam.
This would also be espousing other countries, like Brunei, Malaysia, The Philipines, and aforementioned Vietnam who have been against China’s expansionist agenda of claiming almost all of South Chian Sea
