President of Ukraine Zelenskyy expresses gratitude to UNSC members for voting against Russia

Russia vetoes a UN Security Council resolution condemning the Ukrainian attack; China, India, and the United Arab Emirates abstain.

Russia vetoed a UN Security Council resolution condemning its military aggression against Ukraine.

There were no other votes against the resolution from the council’s 15 members. China surprised observers by abstaining from the vote rather than joining Russia in opposing the resolution. India and the United Arab Emirates both voted no. Russia presided over the vote because it occurred to hold the presidency for the month of February, which rotates among council members.

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy expressed gratitude to members of the United Nations Security Council who voted in favour of a resolution condemning Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, calling the country’s decision to veto the resolution “a bloodstain on its plaque in the Security Council, the map of Europe (and the world).”
