Pakistan Train Hijack: 155 passengers rescued, dozens still in BLA captivity, says report

At least 27 militants were killed, and 155 passengers were rescued by Pakistani security forces after Baloch militants hijacked the Jaffar Express in a tunnel in Balochistan province on March 11. However, reports indicate that dozens of passengers are still in the captivity of the Balochistan Liberation Army (BLA), which claimed responsibility for the attack.

The Jaffar Express, carrying around 400 passengers in nine bogies, was traveling from Quetta to Peshawar when armed militants intercepted it in a tunnel near Gudalar and Piru Kunri. Intense firing and explosions were reported near the site, where the militants took hostages.

Security Operation and Rescue Efforts

According to reports, 58 men, 31 women, and 15 children were among those rescued and sent to Mach in the Kachhi district of Balochistan via another train. However, security operations are still ongoing to secure the release of the remaining hostages.

The hijacking occurred after Pakistan Railways had recently resumed services on this route following a month-and-a-half-long suspension.

Global Reaction

UN Secretary-General António Guterres strongly condemned the attack, urging the immediate release of the hostages. “Attacks against civilians are unacceptable,” his spokesperson stated, calling for an end to violence in the region.

As the rescue operation continues, officials confirmed that at least six security personnel lost their lives during the intense gunfight. The situation remains tense, with security forces working to eliminate the threat and recover all remaining captives.
