In a firm diplomatic stance amid escalating tensions in the Middle East, Iran’s Foreign Minister Abbas Araghchi has stated that Iran will not join Pakistan-led regional meetings aimed at addressing the month-long war involving Iran, the United States, and Israel. The Iranian top diplomat also reminded concerned regional nations to carefully consider “who initiated” the conflict before pushing for de-escalation efforts.
The remarks come as Pakistan hosted a quadrilateral meeting of foreign ministers from Saudi Arabia, Turkey (Türkiye), Egypt, and Pakistan in Islamabad on March 29-30, 2026. Pakistani Foreign Minister Ishaq Dar announced that Islamabad is prepared to host and facilitate “meaningful talks” between the US and Iran in the coming days to achieve a comprehensive and lasting settlement. Dar emphasized that both sides have expressed confidence in Pakistan’s mediation role.
However, Iran’s Foreign Ministry spokesperson clarified that Tehran did not participate in the Pakistan-initiated framework and has not engaged in direct negotiations with the United States.
Context of the Pakistan-Led Diplomatic Push
The Islamabad talks focused on ways to end the fighting, which erupted following US and Israeli strikes on Iranian targets. Key participants included:
• Saudi Arabia’s Foreign Minister Prince Faisal bin Farhan
• Turkey’s Foreign Minister Hakan Fidan
• Egypt’s Foreign Minister Badr Abdelatty
Discussions reportedly touched on opening channels for direct US-Iran dialogue, potential ceasefires, and even management of the Strait of Hormuz to ensure safe shipping and energy flows. Pakistan has positioned itself as a neutral facilitator, passing messages between the parties and expressing willingness to host further talks.
Despite these efforts, Iran has maintained a hardline position. Parliament Speaker Mohammad Bagher Qalibaf warned against any potential US ground invasion, stating that Iranian forces are ready to confront American troops decisively. Iranian officials have also floated their own proposals, including demands for an end to attacks on Iranian officials and civilians, reparations, and respect for Iran’s sovereignty.
