The United Kingdom Maritime Trade Operations has reported a fresh maritime security incident off the coast of Yemen, with a bulk carrier approached by a small black-hulled vessel carrying seven armed individuals approximately 92 nautical miles southwest of Mukalla on Thursday, May 1, 2026.
According to the UKMTO alert, the captain of the bulk carrier reported the approach by the small boat and notified maritime authorities. The vessel’s status, crew safety, and the outcome of the approach have not yet been confirmed in full. Vessels in the region have been advised to exercise extreme caution and report any suspicious activity to UKMTO.
Where this happened and why it matters
Mukalla is a port city on Yemen’s southeastern coast, in the Gulf of Aden — a critical maritime corridor through which a significant portion of global shipping passes en route between the Indian Ocean and the Red Sea. An incident 92 nautical miles southwest of Mukalla places the location in open waters that sit at the intersection of several heavily trafficked shipping lanes.
The geography is significant. While most Houthi attacks have been concentrated further west — in the Red Sea, the Bab-el-Mandeb strait and waters southwest of Hodeidah — incidents in the Gulf of Aden and near Mukalla have historically been associated with a mix of Houthi operations and independent piracy, making attribution in the early hours of any incident difficult.
The pattern of incidents in the region
This latest alert follows a series of maritime security incidents in Yemeni waters over recent months. In one recent incident, 10 to 12 armed individuals on a skiff attempted to board a sailing vessel approximately 54 nautical miles southwest of Al Hudaydah, with the master deploying a flare to deter them before the skiff turned away. In another, a vessel was approached and hailed by a white skiff with five persons on board, followed by an exchange of small arms fire approximately 70 nautical miles southwest of Aden.
Yemen’s Houthi movement has threatened to resume attacks on shipping through the Red Sea in response to the conflict in Iran, adding a new layer of risk to the already volatile maritime environment in the region. Whether Thursday’s incident is linked to the Houthis or represents an independent piracy attempt is not yet established.
What ship operators are being advised
UKMTO and private maritime security firms have consistently advised vessels operating in the region to transit at maximum safe speed, maintain heightened bridge watch, avoid approaching coastal areas, ensure anti-piracy measures including razor wire and water cannons are deployed, and report any suspicious activity — including vessel approaches, drone sightings or radio communications of concern — immediately to UKMTO on Channel 16 or via the vessel reporting portal.
This is a developing story.
