10 million people have fled since Russia invaded Ukraine: UN

UNHCR had earlier estimated that nearly 4 million people could leave Ukraine.

On Sunday, March 20, the United Nations has announced that ten million people have fled from Ukraine due to the Russian invasion.

United Nations refugees chief, Filippo Grandi stated that citizens are the most who suffer in the war. “Among the responsibilities of those who wage war, everywhere in the world, is the suffering inflicted on civilians who are forced to flee their homes. The war in Ukraine is so devastating that 10 million have fled either displaced inside the country or as refugees abroad,” said Grandi.

According to a report by UNHCR, 90% of those who have fled the nation are mostly women & children. As Ukrainian men aged 18-60 have joined the war to defend their country against Russian attacks. UNHCR had earlier estimated that nearly 4 million people could leave Ukraine.

The UN’s child welfare body, UNICEF has stated that there is a risk of an increase in human trafficking & exploitation due to war. Ukraine had a population of 37 million before the Russian invasion & now 10 million have fled the country. There is no sign of ending of this war anytime soon. The International Court of Justice had ordered Russia to withdraw its forces from Russia but Russian President, Vladimir Putin is not budging from his stance on Ukraine.
