On Friday evening, after Indian markets closed, the Reserve Bank of India issued a circular that nobody in currency markets was expecting. The central bank capped authorised dealer banks’ net open rupee position in the onshore foreign exchange market at $100 million per day, effective April 10, with no transition period, no consultation with industry, and no warning. The last time the RBI took a structural control action of this nature was in 2011.
