Severance star Britt Lower treated fans to an Easter egg during her Emmys speech on Sunday (14 September) — and the internet has gone wild.

The American actress, 40, took home the gong for Lead Actress in a Drama Series, for her portrayal of both Helena, the daughter of Lumen’s chief executive, and Helly R, in the Apple TV show.

For those unfamiliar with the show, it hit screens back in 2022 and boasts a star-studded cast, including Adam Scott, John Turturro, and Christopher Walken, among others. The series follows a group of employees at a biotechnology firm, Lumon Industries, who have undergone a process called “severance.” This procedure wipes the staff members’ memories of the outside world while they’re at work, leaving them with no recollection of their jobs once they return home.

When a mysterious colleague appears outside of work, it sparks a journey to discover the truth about their jobs. The second season premiered on 17 January, and season three is already in the works, much to fans’ delight.

After Lower accepted her Emmy, she said:

“First, it’s a privilege to even be mentioned alongside such an incredible group of artists. Wow. I share this award with my heroic cast and crew whose work catalyses mine. Thank you to my mom and my dad, my brother, my husband, our kids, our co-parents, our chosen family. I love you so much. Thank you for this, and thank you for Helly R, for choosing me.”

However, eagle-eyed fans noticed something on the back of her speech notes — three words written in black ink: “LET ME OUT.”

In the show, Helly R. (Helena’s “innie”) writes this same message on her forearms in a desperate attempt to escape Lumon Industries. Fans were instantly obsessed with the reference, calling it “iconic” and praising Lower’s cleverness.

One fan tweeted: “So f**king cool,” while another wrote: “Brilliant.” Others chimed in with comments like “That’s so meta I love it” and “The cast and crew on Severance are dedicated to the subtle clues. Even during an acceptance speech.”

This hidden nod perfectly tied her real-life award moment to her character’s storyline, leaving fans ecstatic and showing just how much care Lower and the Severance team put into their work.
