On Wednesday, U.S. Secretary of State Marco Rubio sat down with South Korea’s Foreign Minister Cho Hyun to talk about how the two countries can work more closely together. Their conversation mainly focused on trade and defense, which both sides see as key parts of their relationship.
According to the U.S. State Department, Rubio praised South Korean companies for investing in the United States and welcomed even more of it in the future. Both officials also spoke about creating a fairer trade system, where each side benefits equally and the partnership feels balanced.
Defense was another big topic. They touched on the idea of sharing defense responsibilities more fairly, though no specific changes or agreements were mentioned in the official statement. It suggests that the talks are still in early stages or that details are being kept private for now.
One thing not brought up in the readout was the recent immigration raid at a Hyundai plant in Georgia. Reports say hundreds of Korean workers were detained, but the official notes from the meeting gave no reference to it at all.
The overall tone of the meeting showed that Washington and Seoul are keen to keep their ties strong, especially in areas that can shape long-term security and economic growth.
