Scarlett Johansson, now celebrated for her powerful roles in films like Under the Skin, Jojo Rabbit, and the Marvel Cinematic Universe, recently opened up about the struggles she faced early in her career after Lost in Translation (2006). In a candid Vanity Fair interview, she revealed how she was typecast in the years following the film, saying, “After Lost in Translation, every role that I was offered for years was ‘the girlfriend,’ ‘the other woman,’ a sex object — I couldn’t get out of the cycle.”

Johansson reflected on how frustrating it was to feel stuck in those roles, describing it as a hit to her dignity as an actor. She also noted that neither she nor her representatives could break free from that pattern, explaining that “the industry worked like that forever.” The actress touched on how expressing herself through clothing or attitude on set sometimes led to feeling subtly exploited, though she was careful not to overstate it.

She also talked about her co-star Bill Murray’s difficult mood on the Lost in Translation set, saying that everyone, including the director, was “on tenterhooks around him,” acknowledging the tense atmosphere.
