In a strategic move aimed at challenging Apple, Huawei Technologies Co. is set to unveil new products just hours after Apple’s anticipated iPhone 16 launch. The timing of Huawei’s event, scheduled for September 10, follows closely behind Apple’s keynote on September 9, signalling a direct clash between the two tech giants.
Huawei’s Consumer Group Chief, Richard Yu, announced the event on Weibo, hinting at a “game-changing product” that has been in development for five years. Reports suggest that Huawei is preparing to unveil the world’s first commercially available smartphone that folds twice. This innovative device, referred to as a trifold, is expected to offer a tablet-like screen within the dimensions of a regular smartphone. Additionally, Huawei is rumoured to be launching a new Aito electric vehicle, although details on the final lineup of products remain unconfirmed, according to a source familiar with the company’s plans.
Apple’s event, showcasing the new iPhone 16 and other accessories, marks its pitch for consumers to upgrade their devices. This launch follows Huawei’s recent success in China, where the company ousted Apple from the top five device makers during the June quarter. Huawei regained a substantial portion of the premium market with its Mate 60 series, which incorporates groundbreaking chip technology.
The timing of Huawei’s announcement underscores its intent to compete head-to-head with Apple in the highly competitive tech market. Yu has been seen with the new trifold device, which is expected to set a new standard in foldable smartphones. Huawei, alongside other Chinese tech players like Honor and Xiaomi, has been advancing foldable phone technology, pushing the boundaries of what is possible in smartphone design.
The upcoming event is poised to highlight Huawei’s commitment to innovation and its determination to challenge Apple’s dominance in the tech industry.
