Dev Patel, amidst gearing up for the release of his directorial debut “Monkey Man,” engaged in a lively Ask Me Anything (AMA) session on Reddit, where he shared insights into his favorite Bollywood films, the challenges of filmmaking, and the casting process for the movie.
When asked about his favorite Bollywood films and whether they influenced his work on “Monkey Man,” Patel expressed his admiration for Shah Rukh Khan’s work, indicating the impact of Khan’s performances on his creative process.
Regarding the most challenging aspect of making “Monkey Man,” Patel highlighted the intricacies of the editing process, particularly in crafting the tabla training montage, which presented a complex puzzle to piece together.
Discussing the casting of Sobhita Dhulipala, who makes her Hollywood debut in “Monkey Man,” Patel praised her beauty and her ability to portray pain effectively as a performer. He emphasized Dhulipala’s strength in her role, portraying a character trapped in a corrupt system with resilience rather than as a traditional damsel in distress.
“Monkey Man” features a diverse ensemble cast, including Sikandar Kher, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash, Vipin Sharma, Ashwini Kalsekar, Adithi Kalkunte, and Makarand Deshpande. The film follows an underdog street fighter who transforms into a vigilante superhero, fighting against oppression and seeking justice for his mother’s death.
