Sweet Magnolias is one of the most highly-anticipated shows on the global streaming landscape, as it is a wonderful depiction of small-town America told through the strong friendship of the show’s three main characters – the Magnolias (Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen) – as they experience love, family, career issues and relationships with one another and their community in the idyllic town of Serenity, South Carolina. Following Season 4’s drama-filled cliffhanger (which delivered significant emotional depth and plenty of relatable drama), there are many emotions around the release of Season 5, which will deliver many relatable yet impactful friendships, challenges, and warmth to its fans.

Sweet Magnolias Season 5: Everything You Need to Know

Netflix’s drama Sweet Magnolias is based on Sherryl Woods’ series of books about three best friends – Maddie Townsend, Dana Sue Sullivan, and Helen Decatur – who live in the small town of Serenity, South Carolina. The first three seasons followed the lives and relationships of these three close friends, but Season 4 ended with some major cliffhanger moments and exciting promise for the future, including Maddie’s potential move to New York City for a job in publishing, and a chance for Dana Sue to start anew.

On April 23, 2025, Netflix announced the show’s renewal for Season 5, which will have a total of ten episodes with the same themes of small-town dynamics, relationship dramas, and strong female friendships.

All three lead actresses will reprise their respective roles in the new season: JoAnna Garcia Swisher as Maddie, Brooke Elliott as Dana Sue, and Heather Headley as Helen.

In addition to these lead performers, many of the series’ major supporting characters – including Logan Allen, Anneliese Judge, Carson Rowland, Justin Bruening, Jamie Lynn Spears, and others – are likely to return.

Brooke Elliott will direct the fourth episode of Season 5, and JoAnna Garcia Swisher will direct the fifth and sixth episodes.

There have also been some new cast members added to the show, although further information regarding new cast members has not yet been released.

Netflix has set the premiere for June 11, 2026, with all 10 episodes dropping at once, including a girls’ trip to New York City.

Plot and Teasers

Season 5 of the series features a continuation of the events that occurred in Season 4, with the primary focus of this season being on the issues Maddie must face regarding her acceptance of an offer to work in New York that would involve relocating away from Serenity, where she has developed roots in her marriage, family life, and circle of friends. The show will also look at numerous issues such as the difficulty women experience when considering whether to pursue their own dreams and desires as they relate to other family, community, and connection issues.

One of the season’s key aspects will be the Magnolias taking a girls’ weekend trip to New York City—a first-look image has been provided that shows the three women (Maddie, Dana Sue and Helen) sharing a group hug in Central Park, hinting at both the time they will spend together in New York and the ability of their friendship to endure regardless of distance or change.

Showrunner, Sheryl J. Anderson, has stated that throughout the new season, the women will struggle with the emotional aspect of their lives as they determine if they are “allowed” to put themselves first when facing a multitude of complications in their lives—including those related to their complicated relationship(s) with Maddie.

Expect to see many of the same comfort elements included throughout this series: small-town drama, laughter, kindness with a little emotion, new opportunities, and the strong ties of the Magnolia women throughout the entire season.

There is no full-length trailer or episode synopses yet available. However, expect to see updates, sneak peeks, and a new look at the Magnolias’ adventures in NYC on Netflix’s Tudum leading up to each episode.
