From China to Chennai: Apple shifts its manufacturing base to India for Iphone 11

Apple Inc. shifts its manufacturing base of Iphone 11 from China to India.

The California giant Apple Inc. has started the manufacturing of its Iphone 11 in India. Manufacturing one of its flagship products, Apple has started manufacturing the model at the Foxconn plant near Chennai. This move by the company comes amidst the boost being given to “Atmanirbhar Bharat” by the government of India.

The move also signifies a shift in the focus of the tech giant from China to India. China has always been the hub of manufacturing for apple. However, this time, Apple chose India instead to produce the widely sold Iphone 11.

The manufacturing would be increased in phases and the company might also consider exporting the Indian made version of the Iphone 11 to other countries. Ultimately, this move reduced the company’s dependence on China and encourages domestic production in India, which is one of the top priorities of the current government.

The Minister of Railways and Commerce & Industry, Piyush Goyal, took Twitter expressing his joy and the commitment of the current government to boost ‘Make in India’.

It has also been reported by Economic Times that Apple is considering to begin the production of Iphone SE’s new model at the Wistron Plant near Bengaluru. The company had earlier used this plant to manufacture the then model of the Iphone SE in the year 2017.

The Taiwanese manufacturer, Pegatron, which is also one of Apple’s contract manufacturers, has registered a subsidiary in India.

Apple Inc has taken the first step in shifting its base from the mainland to one of its neighbors. This move has taken place while the Sino-US diplomatic relations are undergoing a huge escalated turmoil.
